Seacoast Residence

The site prior to design was an undeveloped field boasting enormous mature beech trees. In designing the landscape for development, TFLA worked to preserve and incorporate one of these spectacular specimens into a walled terrace living space that would accommodate the large elevation differences in the architecture’s design. Each plant in the design was hand-selected for immediate impact on-site, while the fountain and fire-bowl were custom designed by TFLA and fabricated for this project. More formal plantings near the residence transition to a birch grove, underplanted with native grasses to merge into the existing meadow area on the eight acre property.

This design project was awarded to TFLA after competition of conceptual designs with others. The TFLA design featured a muscular perimeter wall and an elaborate outdoor room set in a system of terraced stone walls. Over time, the pool in the original design morphed into a fountain with custom designed bronze spouts and an exquisite bronze fire bowl. The planting is structured to provide privacy and detailed to emphasize simplicity of form and line to compliment the building with numerous textural tones. All plants were hand selected as specimens.
