Smuttynose Brewery

Towle Farm was a 14 acre farm before Smuttynose Brewery purchased the property. After TFLA’s collaboration with McHenry Architecture, a LEED Gold facility was constructed on the existing farm site, retaining old farm buildings, orchards, and the majority of the existing trees on-site. Stone walls and native rain gardens surround the parking areas and ADA walkways, adding a connection to the agricultural history of the site, and providing aesthetic stormwater management for the site.

Terra firma worked in collaboration with Altus Engineering to layout and grade the site with minimal disturbance to the existing tree cover and orchard. The overall site coverage including the 40,000 square foot brewery complex is only 21%. The landscape plan stressed limiting construction impacts to the existing site, the use of sustainable native vegetation, maintaining existing trees to shade the parking and permeable pavement.
