3S Artspace
The 3S Artspace site is small, but the exterior spaces are unique to Portsmouth. The spaces include: a street-side restaurant terrace surrounded by native grasses and shade trees and an entry court to theater space that includes a slope ramp and sitting wall, lawn space, edible plants, stone plinths for sitting and impromptu theatrics, and a green screen separating the space from the immediate parking lot to the south.
The bench uses remnant stone blocks from the abutments of the original Memorial Bridge to anchor the serpentine seating surface which is composed of durable white oak planks. This horizontal form is complimented by the narrow upright deciduous hedge of Hornbeam trees that serve to screen the view of the adjacent parking lot. The hedge and bench are intended to extend the theater experience for the 3S patrons and offer an exceptional view from the restaurant and gallery.
