Working

Selected by Art Speak, this sculpture won the first ever 1% for the arts commission in Portsmouth associated with the new Foundry Place Parking Garage. The Working sculpture uses three 9’ tall steel hammers in combination with a giant steel pulley wheel (technology) with unparallel train tracks (time) to personify the work experience of the 1800’s in this neighborhood. This is a tribute to the unheralded people who built our culture with sheer effort, often with hand tools, and no shortage of hope, sacrifice, and struggle.

‘Working’ sits behind the Foundry garage at the Rock Street intersection.
