The York Hospital is sited in the watershed of the York River and is required to ameliorate the effects of storm water discharge near the river. Terra firma worked closely with Altus Engineering to complement their storm water development plan through creating expansive rain-garden bio-retention cells to capture and filter the storm water prior to release. This process dramatically improves storm water quality by removing suspended solids, heavy metals and nutrients, and lowering the temperature of parking lot storm water run-off.
Terra firma planned the rain-garden design with sustainable native plants with a ornamental appeal given that the grounds of a hospital should have restorative qualities. The landscape plan extends well beyond the rain gardens and addresses all of the areas around building expansions, parking and helipad.
